The Nominalist Semantics of Ockham and Buridan

چکیده

Some historical-philosophical preliminaries This paper is going to outline the innovative semantic theories of the two great 14century nominalist thinkers whose work eventually gave rise to the quasi-institutional separation of the nominalist via moderna, the “modern way”, from the realist via antiqua, “the old way” of doing logic, science, philosophy, and theology in the late Middle Ages. The person who initiated these changes was the English Franciscan theologian, William Ockham. However, the person who was primarily responsible for establishing Ockham’s nominalism as a genuinely viable theoretical alternative was the French secular Master of Arts, John Buridan.

Privative Negation in the Port Royal Logic

In this paper I argue that negation in The Port Royal Logic is not a failed or incoherent 4 approximation of Boolean complementation as maintained by Sylvain Auroux and Marc Dominicy, 5 but is rather a version of privative negation from medieval logic, and that as such it has a perfectly 6 coherent semantics. The discussion reviews the critiques of Auroux and Dominicy as well as the 7 semantics...

Does a Leaking O-Corner Save the Square?

It has been known at least since Abelard (12th century) that the classic Square of Opposition suffers from so-called undue existential import (UEI) in that this system of predicate logic collapses when the class denoted by the restrictor predicate is empty. It is usually thought that this mistake was made by Aristotle himself, but it has now become clear that this is not so: Aristotle did not h...

"Classical" Planning under Uncertainty*

Research in the classical paradigm has produced effective representations and algorithms for building courses of actions that achieve an input goal. For the most part these systems has~ also assumed an omnipotent and omniscient agent: the agent knows with certainty the initial state of the world and what changes its actions will make, and is assured that no exogenous forces will change the worl...

Higher Order Logic Programming with Untyped Lambda Expressions

A higher order logic programming system is presented. The declarative semantics of the system is based on the type-free higher order logic NaDSyL, which takes a nominalist approach to solving the set-theoretic paradoxes. The operational semantics is based on the deterministic and useful subset of higher order uni cation known as pattern uni cation. It is shown that the system allows all express...

Application of Frame Semantics to Teaching Seeing and Hearing Vocabulary to Iranian EFL Learners

A term in one language rarely has an absolute synonymous meaning in the same language; besides, it rarely has an equivalent meaning in an L2. English synonyms of seeing and hearing are particularly grammatically and semantically different. Frame semantics is a good tool for discovering differences between synonymous words in L2 and differences between supposed L1 and L2 equivalents. Vocabulary ...
